Questions about Split by Bookmarks
Frequently asked technical and operational questions about split by bookmarks.
How does splitting by outline bookmarks determine output documents?
The tool inspects the PDF internal document outline (table of contents tree) and creates a new document at each top-level chapter bookmark, naming each output file after its corresponding section title.
What happens if my PDF contains nested sub-bookmarks?
By default, splitting targets top-level bookmarks so full chapters remain intact. Sub-sections within a chapter are preserved inside their respective chapter file.
What should I do if my PDF lacks internal bookmarks?
If your document only has printed visual headings but no PDF bookmark outline, use our Create Bookmarks tool first to define chapter boundaries before splitting.
